On June 22, 2006 we saw at least 40-50 breeding pairs of fire-fronted bishops spread out along roadsides and fields in rank grass and weeds near the prison pond in Olasiti. The male birds when displaying are similar to yellow puffbacks. Note that the images all show small red forehead patches whereas the field guides show large red patches.
One resource says that fire-fronted bishops compete with cardinal quelea for nesting sites. Prior to the bishops nesting here there was a colony of cardinal quelea but we don't know if this was sequential or displacement. |
