Most of these photos of black-backed puffbacks are males. The female has a short white stripe in front of the eye. Most of these images are ssp. hamatus which has white scapulars and wing edges except the right lower photo which is ssp. affinis, found along the coast (Emayani, 3-14). The upper female was seen at Mbuyuni Farm-Morogoro (8-22), courtesy of Kim Axmann. The displaying left 2nd row bird was seen in Msumbe, courtesy of Miles Paul. The female in hand was seen in the Udzungwa Mountains, courtesy of Dr. Louis A. Hansen.
