d'Arnaud's barbet is often seen in wooded and bushed grassland in northern Tanzania east of the Rift Valley, usually feeding on the ground and sometimes near termite mounds. The similar Usambiro barbet is larger, has a darker grey bill and occurs west of the Rift Valley.
