The white-chested alethe is endemic to southeast Africa; the upper and right 2nd row bird was photographed in the Udzungwa Mountains, courtesy of Dr. Louis A. Hansen who notes: 'Sexes alike; age: adult; subspecies: various publications suggest up to three races, however Birds of Africa mentions them as just clinal variations". The 4th row bird was seen in Shagayu Forest (Mambo), courtesy of Valéry Schollaert; the 5th row, Uluguru Mountains, courtesy of Florence Holmen; and the bottom, South Pare Mtns, courtesy of Frank Priscus Shirima.
