The African pygmy is smaller that the otherwise similar malachite kingfisher, but note that the blue crown does not extend to the eye, separating it from other blue-crowned kingfishers. The upper photo (near Arusha) is courtesy of Frank Priscus Shirima; the 2nd row photo (Selous) is courtesy of Claude Medle; the right 3rd row, Semliki WR-Uganda, courtesy Karine Van der Vurst. The immature (left 4th row) was seen at Maji Moto, courtesy of Colin Beale; the right 4th row, Mara River, courtesy Per Holmen; the right lower, Maasai Mara, courtesy of Steve Brynes. The other photos were taken at Mahale NP and Minziro. Click the left lower photo to see 9 enlargements.
