A small woodpecker (13 cm), the male and female brown-backed woodpecker have diagnostic brown ear coverts. The crown is red in the male, brown in the female. The upper bird was seen at Adi Quala (Eritrea) in January 2009, courtesy of Jason Anderson. The photos were taken in the Nou Forest in October 2009. |
